Kilimajaro, TZ – RWA family garden – 16 Sep 2013
All four of RWA’s short-term beds are currently productive. She is able to feed her family with a healthy mix of leafy greens each night. This is exciting because it seemed early on that she might not be able to keep up with the work. She has even asked to expand her garden in the near future.
She takes care of two grandchildren as well as her husband. She said the garden doesn’t save her a lot of money because she didn’t used to buy vegetables very often, but that the family is happy to have the added nutrients. She said she has not been selling any vegetables but would be interested in selling the sukuma wiki (kale) because it is the least popular vegetable for her family.
For some reason there are gaps in two beds – carrots and zucchini. She is not sure exactly why this happened. In the carrot bed she will just leave it alone and let them come. With the zucchinis she will put new seeds in the empty spots. Hopefully they will still be able to come well and she will just have plants of slightly different ages in the same bed.
