Siem Reap, KH – Widow’s garden feeds six children – 2 Jul 2014

SL is a widow with six children living in Peak Sneang. Life has been hard for her as she has had to raise and provide for her four children alone. As a rice farmer, she sometimes doesn’t even make enough to feed herself and her children.Seung Lep faith garden during our mentoring visitAfter seeing a Food Always In The Home (FAITH) garden being built on neighbouring land, SL approached the staff at our Water Buffalo Garden Shop and asked for help. Since our workers helped her to build her garden, she has been able to grow healthy and organic vegetables to feed herself and her family. There has even been enough extra for her to sell at the market.

Maintaining the garden has been challenging as there were a number of insects destroying the plants. However, we were able to overcome this by providing a natural insect repellent spray. SL and her children have enjoyed working in the garden as they believe it is good exercise and it has brought the family closer together.productive garden of Seung Lep faith gardenAnother challenge faced by SL and the garden shop team is that vegetable prices at the market are low. However, she has been able to make a small income from selling vegetables and also cut down on her own food expenses.

The FAITH garden is just a small project yet it has a big impact on the lives of the people we help. It gives us inspiration and joy when we see the productivity of the gardens we helped create. Faith Garden encourages people to eat healthy and remain active. Thank you to the garden shop team!
