Kikondo, UG – Family uses FAITH gardening skills and water conservation for cabbage cash crop – Aug 2026

JNS Family has used its FAITH garden methods, investment money management, and refillable water bottle irrigation, to produce an exceptional cash crop during the dry season. The family has operated a FAITH garden for the last seven years, and joined Zinabala VICOBA to save and learn money skills. That invested time and education and work enabled profitable growing even with limited rainfall.

The VICOBA provided contacts and taught the family how to rent a plot of land where it grew cabbages during the dry season just ended thanks to the water bottle irrigation. Their aim was to harvest and sell their crop while vegetable demand and prices are high, before rains enable easier growing, more food supply, and lower prices.

By the end of August, the family had invested one million shillings (about 285USD), 300,000 to rent half an acre, 150,000 for a tin of improved cabbage seeds, 300,000 in labor, and 250,000 for irrigation and other inputs. They managed to sell 1,500 cabbage heads at 2,000 shillings each, fetching three million sales and a net profit of 2 million.

Future challenges will include climate that becomes more and more difficult to plan, and global factors that have driven up the price of high-quality seeds and made them difficult to get. Kikondo village becomes more urban by the day as Kampala and Entebbe grow, housing many workers who provide service in areas with higher population. Still, the family dreams of buying land in their home village so that they can continue growing vegetables.
