Kasaka, UG – FAITH garden growing with rainwater collection creates savings for agriculture land rental – May 2026

The KJM family benefits in many ways from Grow and Earn programs which helped them buy the gutter above their home’s front door and a collection barrel to capture rainwater. They have participated in Wamukisa’s programs for about two years. FAITH gardening has helped their five children aged 5 to 13 all year round to keep healthy by eating fresh vegetables and to perform better at Kasaka Primary School.

KJM father works as a casual laborer in Kasaka and surrounding villages, with help from his children. That helps him earn income he uses to look after his family. After his success with FAITH gardening, Mr. KJM joined Basooka VICOBA, where he now can save up to 2,000 shillings daily.

He managed to purchase a 240-liter water barrel using 150,000 shillings borrowed from the VICOBA. In addition to the water barrel, he managed to buy 3 jerrycans to carry water for the garden, cleaning, and bathing. By collecting rain, the children no longer have to spend the time to walk 1km distance to fetch water from a spring. The family has realized they now save a lot of time when they have water in the barrel.

But the family has limited land both to expand their vegetables and to grow staple crops like beans, maize, and cassava. They hope to save and later have a loan of 100,000 so that they can rent a 1-acre piece of land which will greatly improve their earnings. They hope to rent the land in the August – December growing season and plant maize and beans to sell.
