Kikondo, UG – Family’s hard work and saving for investment creates a thriving chicken business – Apr 2026

For the last 3 years the KSJ family has been working hard to achieve its dream of operating a poultry project at its home. After learning from its FAITH garden the techniques of earning income from sale of organic vegetables, it started saving with Zinabala VICOBA. The family set a target of 7,000 shillings (about two USD) saved every week to realize its dream.

The family has managed to operate a poultry project at its home and at the same time expand its FAITH garden. Poultry manure, very high in nitrogen and phosphorus essential for growing vegetables, is ideal for making soil-improving compost. With green and brown plant waste, some broken egg shells, and some other inputs like an EM-1 beneficial microorganism solution from Wamukisa, KSJ nourishes with aged compost its ten beds of vegetables in their FAITH garden.

With advice and shared experience of other poultry farmers in Kikondo village, the family now produces and sells 3kg chicken broilers. The family started raising 25 birds from one-day old chicks to market size. Due to increased investment from savings, it now produces 50 birds every 8 weeks. Mrs. KSJ uses roughly 30,000 shillings cost every 8 weeks to produce a bird she sells at 40,000 shillings. Family income has grown by 500,000 shillings (about 143 USD) every two months, stable as long as the chicken market stays stable.

KSJ family has used all the land available in the plot surrounding their home for their existing FAITH garden and has no more land to expand. Mrs. KSJ sees a rise in customers for her birds from within the village and neighboring towns. She hopes to grow sales income by concentrating more on her poultry project
