Ngara, TZ – Government, parents and SODAT collaborate to build a toilet block for over 700 students – Apr 2026
Mukirehe Primary celebrates launching its first modern sustainable toilet, which is a major achievement made possible by a collaboration between the government, parents, and SODAT.
This strong collaboration was assisted by SODAT’s Parents Assistance Award Program (PAAP) and Government Assistance Award Program (GAAP). Together, the collaborators raised TZS 28.82 million, with SODAT contributing TZS 13.70 million, the government TZS 10 million, and parents TZS 5.12 million plus contributing voluntary labor.

Unlike other Mukirehe ward toilets, It’s built to meet long-term needs and reduce the recurring burden on parents of rebuilding temporary latrines. This directly improves student health by providing a reliable toilet and reducing the risk of outbreaks of waterborne disease like cholera.
Previously, more than 700 students relied on just four toilet holes, leading to limited access during break time. Today, the school has a total of 13 toilet holes: 6 for girls, 5 for boys, including a urinal area, and 2 for students with special needs. This is significantly improving sanitation access, health, safety and dignity.

Alongside mentoring the school breakfast Grow-Own-Breakfast “GOB” program, SODAT continues to promote hygiene education, including proper toilet use, cleaning practices, and handwashing with soap and water. These improvements have brought joy among students by contributing to better health, increasing school attendance, and academic performance.
