Moshe, TZ – Tupendane Grow Your Own Breakfast (GOB) Program is feeding Bodies, Minds and Markets – Mar 2026

The Tupendane GOB (Grow Your Own Breakfast) Program has begun to demonstrate clear progress toward sustainability, particularly after the establishment of commercial school gardens that now produce sufficient, healthy harvests for sale. This achievement has been made possible through strong and consistent mentoring provided to both children and teachers on best organic farming practices.

As a result of continuous harvesting, schools are now able to feed students nutritious meals during every school day. In addition, surplus vegetables are sold in local markets, generating income that helps cover the running costs of the school gardens. This approach not only improves food security but also strengthens the long‑term sustainability of the program.

Organic produce is not common within the Kahe District community. Therefore, Tupendane recognized the need for a deliberate strategy to raise awareness and create demand for chemical-free vegetables. To address this, Tupendane conducted community seminars and established several mobile display kiosks at strategic locations. These kiosks were used to brand and promote our organic vegetables, emphasizing that they are chemical‑free and safe for consumption.

This strategy significantly increased sales, contributing to school income while also improving community health by providing access to food grown without harmful chemicals. Following the positive response from the community, Tupendane introduced a second strategy that actively involved parents through Women’s Village Community Banking (VICOBA) groups, together with Tupendane team members.

These groups became key distributors of vegetables and bananas, using bicycles equipped with mobile kiosks to deliver produce directly to local restaurants and markets. Through this initiative, women earn income to support their families while helping to expand market access for produce grown by the schools. This has created a strong and mutually beneficial partnership between schools, families, and the wider community. As the initiative continues to prove effective and efficient, transportation has emerged as a key challenge. Limited mobility affects the ease and enjoyment of work for both Tupendane team members and Women VICOBA groups.

Our dream is to secure support to acquire at least three motorbikes, which would be used by the VICOBA groups and the Tupendane team. These motorbikes would significantly improve distribution efficiency, enable expansion into more markets, and strengthen a sustainable business model that benefits schools, Tupendane members, and community groups. We believe this initiative will become the backbone of our school feeding program that improves nutrition, academic prformance, community health, income generation, and long‑term sustainability of the GOB program.
