Moshe, TZ – A safer path to school breakfast at Kisangasangeni Primary School – Jan 2026

For many years, children at Kisangasangeni Primary School struggled without regular school meals. Everything changed when Tupendane and its partners visited the school and joined hands with parents, teachers, and the local government to launch a feeding program.

Once the program began, the children learned to plant, grow, harvest, cook, and serve their own breakfast from their school garden. The results were inspiring: we observed continuous improvements in their health, academic performance, and daily attendance.

However, expanding the garden has created a new challenge: the need for much more water. Children were forced to walk several hundred meters every morning and evening to fetch water from a dangerous river inhabited by crocodiles. This not only put their safety at risk but also consumed valuable time that could have been spent learning or working in the garden.

Recognizing the urgency, Tupendane acted immediately. With support from Better Lives, we built a new water system with a raised tank in the garden area. This system eliminated the daily danger the children faced and saved countless hours of labor.

To strengthen this progress, we saw the need to expand the school garden into a more sustainable farm — one large enough to include a commercial section. This additional area would produce extra crops that could be sold to generate income, helping cover the running costs of the entire garden.

Today, the school enjoys an effective, efficient, and enjoyable irrigation system. Because of this, the children now follow a far safer path to accessing their daily breakfast at school. Our next dream is to complete the school kitchen, creating a proper, hygienic space where meals can be prepared with dignity and care — a future that feels much closer now.
