Ngara, TZ – Cyclonic rainfall made teachers homeless in Kabalenzi village – Nov 2025

For the past five years, the climate has been changing and delivering more unpredictable weather to Kabalenzi village. This year, the rainy season started a month late and began with a strong storm that severely damaged the school’s buildings and water infrastructure. The storm blew off the roof of the teachers’ house, leaving two teachers without shelter. They are now renting rooms in the village at their own cost so they can continue teaching when there is a shortage of teachers.

The storm also destroyed the school’s rainwater harvesting system. The gutters were damaged and the 5,000 liter water tank cracked completely, causing serious water shortages for preparing school breakfast when tap water is unavailable. The storage space for breakfast ingredients and utensils was also damaged inside the teachers’ house whose roof was blown away.

The school urgently appealed to SODAT and development partners to help repair the teachers’ house, restore the rainwater system, and rebuild storage facilities. This will ensure safe housing for teachers and sustainable breakfast serving to grow students’ health, attendance, and academic performance. SODAT’s partner Better Lives wants to assist the teachers and school, so will provide the funds so that the repair work can commence quickly in early January.
