Kikondo, UG – FAITH gardening family uses training and VICOBA funding to grow maize income – Sep 2025
MJP family has been active in all activities carried out by Wamukisa in Kikondo village. The family started 7 years ago by operating a FAITH garden. Later, they joined Zinabala group where the family learnt to operate a staple crop garden and had access to funding for a new business.
From its membership in Zinabala, MJP has now learned agricultural skills such as high quality seed choices, nourishment of soil, watering, and mulching for a staple crop garden. It acquired a loan of 100,000 Ugandan Shillings and used 200,000 UGS of its VICOBA savings to rent a half acre of farm land and buy crop inputs.
The whole family participated in utilizing the land, even sorting together harvested grain from debris, and by the end of last season, they managed to harvest 500kgs of maize. 400kg of the harvest sold for 1,500 UGS per kilo, earning 600,000 UGS. The family kept 100kgs of maize for its own consumption and repaid its loan. They saved the remaining money to re-invest it in the coming growing season.
This growing season’s late rain has delayed preparations for operating a staple crop garden again and will affect next year’s harvests. If the harvest is good, they hope to save so that they can invest in order to earn profits from a poultry project in the near future.
