KIlimanjaro, TZ – GOB program is nourishing students’ health for a successful brighter future – Aug 2025

Mkyashi Primary School is making steady, sustainable progress in developing its school garden to support the student breakfast serving program.

Following last year’s success, where all class seven students passed to secondary school, the school, in partnership with Lishe Bora, engaged parents in promoting the school Grow-Own-Breakfast (GOB) program. The garden clubs were improved by including older students from class 4–7 levels to give them hands-on experience with the gardening production lifecycle as part of Elimu ya Kijamii (EK) social studies.

With a strong teamwork and school leadership, vegetable production has increased to 20 kilograms of fresh produce daily, which serves breakfast to 446 students. The planted banana trees have also started bearing fruit, further improving the quality of school breakfast when it’s cooked with green veg or beans.

Lishe Bora supports the garden clubs with weekly mentoring visits about best practices, and providing essential materials. Together with the project teacher, they set weekly goals for the sustainable productivity to grow student health, attendance, attentiveness and academic (3A) performance.
