Utete, TZ – Katundu Primary School sesame harvest triggers next harvest plans and breakfast serving program – Jun 2025
Katundu Primary School made a record harvesting 250 kilos of sesame for the first time, an inspiring step toward ensuring a sustainable breakfast program for its students. Through strong collaboration with parents, KCM, and support from BL, the school cultivated 3 acres and sold the yield at the government price of Tsh 2,400 per kilo, earning Tsh 600,000. To ensure continuity, 15 kilos of seeds are reserved for the next planting season in January 2026.

This progress was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the school leadership, project teacher, and student clubs, who participated in every stage of the farming process through mentorship. Encouraged by this success, parents formed a breakfast development committee to prepare 6 acres for the upcoming season. Their shared goal is to harvest 800 kilos and generate at least Tsh 1.6 million that will sustain the school breakfast program and promote self-reliance through the cultivation of sesame and cashew, both important national cash crops.
Today, the community sees school land as a source of health, learning, and long-term opportunity for their children.
