Kasaka, UG – Kasaka Secondary School starts agriculture club with FAITH gardening methods – May 2025

With the help of Wamukisa, this year Kasaka Secondary School started an agriculture club supervised by teachers Enoch and Aggrey. We provided all tools and compost while the school club provided all labor from learners and 4 acres of school land for the project. In February the club started developing a vegetable garden with training from Wamukisa’s Kikondo and Kasaka teams to maintain gardens and begin compost making. The club has shown progress each month.
We enrolled over 200 club members in the whole school of 800 students, a very enthusiastic response to the opportunity. Each week the club will hold multiple garden maintenance and learning meetings with smaller groups of members so each student will have more individual time to work and learn. The garden design allocates almost one acre for vegetable growing and over three acres for coffee and banana trees downslope from existing dormitories and a rainwater collection system.

By the end of May the club raised 40 beds planted with carrots, kale, onions and bitterberries in them. When complete the design will have 60 beds. The club has now started making its own compost which they will use continuously in growing vegetables and later use in starting their own staple crop garden. Club members are going to start harvesting vegetables in the first week of June, adding nutritious food to their diets.

During the dry season like the one we have started, club members don’t enjoy fetching water in containers filled in the area near the girls’ dormitory and poured out in the garden. They also find it time consuming. They dream of having an improved water delivery system with standpipes in the vegetable growing area. Future planned small steps at Kasaka Secondary School include irrigation of not only the vegetable garden area, but also acres further downslope to be planted with coffee to sell and staple crops to support Wamukisa’s first Grow Own Breakfast program in Uganda.
