Siem Reap, KH – NN family survive COVID lockdowns, weather challenges and recent inflation thanks to their vegetable garden – 30 Nov 2022

The NN family have survived COVID-19, weather extremes and high inflation due in part to Russsian invation of Ukraine that together have created a world crisis that has had a devastating impact on the economy in Cambodia. They are grateful to their Food Always in the Home (FAITH) vegetable garden for feeding them during these troubling times.

There are increasing prices of fuel and goods, and a continuous need to increase food production. In this scenario, it is in developing countries like Cambodia where the food scarcity is most acute, there is increasing poor health of families and children as a result of low income.

Fortunately, over the last decade the Better Lives and Peaksneng Thormacheat partnership has strengthened and intensified local food production through teaching and mentoring families about FAITH vegetable gardens that enhance household food security and nutrition. The NN family is a good example of this. NN is a Peaksneng Thormacheat construction partner who builds houses for Rent-to-Own (RTO) home families.

Over the recent year the NN family, including their children, have united to maintain a productive FAITH garden. NN’s best practice approach has influenced other people to use the same method. NN said “Some might think that a fun family activity has to be to go to vacation, but even at home there are lots of things you can do to have fun with the family” One example is creating a FAITH garden. Nyoun maintains one of the oldest gardens that belong to RTO home families. His family’s garden has persistently endured the test of time, especialy the dry and rainy seasons, and continues to play an important role in providing food and income for the family. NN has said “I owe everything I have to Better Lives and Rey. They changed my life with our FAITH garden and RTO home.”
