Moshi, TZ – Parmiters School assists with facilities and garden improvements for Kahe Primary School – 26 Jul 2019

14 students, 2 teachers, and 1 True Adventure leader from Parmiters School spent 6 days working with Tupendane and Kahe Primary School to improve school facilities and gardens. “They are very hard working!” expressed Deo, the Tupendane manager. By the end of the trip the group had completed:

  • 1 single hole toilet
  • 2 classroom floor repairs
  • 1 handwash basins
  • 1 handwash training
  • 15 mosquito nets distributed
  • 2 industrial-sized cooking pots purchased
  • 6 organic compost piles
  • 3 organic vegetable gardens
  • 3 banana gardens
  • 30 moringa trees

Repairing classroom floors reduces dust and dirt in the classroom, makes them easier to clean, and creates a nicer environment for the teachers and students to work and study. Building a new single hole toilet means Kahe students no longer share their school toilet with the local government offices – it is safer to have separate facilities for children and adults. Parmiters’ distribution of mosquito nets means 15 children will be less likely to miss school due to malaria. The additional gardens and bananas will increase the amount of vegetables available at the school students for the daily breakfast feeding program. Lastly, the handwash basin will increase student hygiene and reduce school days missed due to illness.

One Parmiters student expressed: “I loved helping the whole community and being able to make a difference in children’s lives. I loved working hard for children and having a lot of fun. The project work was an amazing experience.” summarized one student from Parmiters school.

Kahe Primary School completed their first season of farming corn for serving in the school breakfast. Parmiters’ work with the school gave a much-needed reminder of the importance of community participation. With regards to the Kahe community, several students noted they felt “lucky to be surrounded by a great group of workers who gave a lot of help” and that “everyone welcomed [them] and made [them] feel happy and comfortable.”
