Kilimanjaro, TZ – Continuously improving income to enhance future education opportunities – 12 Feb 2016

LISHE GASPA (5)_edited

The GMK family started their garden in May 2015. They have always seen themselves as farmers so starting an organic vegetable garden with the Lishe Bora Garden Shop was a natural fit for them. Their enthusiasm for farming shows in their garden. They have already built their own seedling nursery and have maintained a consistently productive garden.

The family is focused on steadily increasing their productive assets so that when their children start school they will be able to afford all of the costs. Their organic vegetable garden has contributed to the continuous expansion of their livestock projects so that they now own 2 pigs, 15 chickens, 4 goats, and 3 cows.

The family estimates they eat between one and two kilograms of vegetables per day. This saving has enabled the family to spend more money on livestock and feel more confident expanding their livestock projects. Most recently they refurbished their goat shed and added a new goat. Since starting their garden they have also sold around 40,000 TZS (US $19.05) of vegetables from their garden. The father has invested this money into his local Vicoba (Village Community Bank). He hopes to either qualify for a loan or make interest on his investment from other people’s loans.
