Temeke, TZ – SAWA delivering WaSH infrastructure at schools – 15 May 2015

February through April of 2015 was a busy period for SAWA. SAWA team members spent most of their time in the field implementing projects. One of the major projects the organization worked on was the School WaSH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) improvement project in Temeke Municipality. This large community infrastructure and organization project has benefitted 11 schools in the municipality. The project is funded by UNICEF and the Hungary Charity of the Order of Malta.

Between February and April finishing work was done on schools in Phase 2 of the project. Phase 2 targeted to improve WaSH infrastructure for 9 schools.  SAWA targeted to complete finishing work, painting, and pump installation at 3 of the 9 school. All of the painting was completed and the pumps are ready to be installed once the schools receive the electrical connection necessary for the pumps to operate.

SAWA also conducted joint inspections and formal handovers with 4 of the 9 schools in Phase 2 of the project. Ndege, Bahati, Muungano, and Serengeti schools have all taken control and responsibility of their school WaSH infrastructure.

To prepare the communities to begin activities SAWA conducted community mobilization meetings, hygiene promotion campaigns, and teacher trainings for 4 schools in Phase 3. Phase 3 will provide hand-wash facilities and extend water lines to schools.
