1534747035209The SBA family has saved 180,000 UGS (US $48) since learning organic gardening best practices from Wamukisa in August 2018. The family started with a three-bed garden and promptly expanded their efforts by applying organic best practices to a small plot of eggplants.

The family’s three-bed garden reduces grocery bills by providing daily vegetables for consumption. They sell the eggplants for income and invest funds in their VICOBA group. The family wants to expand their income-generating garden so they can save more and invest in livestock like chicken and pigs.

SBA ExtensionUnfortunately, their entrepreneurial ambitions are hindered by the availability of land. Urban sprawl from Entebbe and Kampala is encroaching on land local families in Kikondo used to use for farming. The land around SBA family’s home is becoming scarce. Renting expensive land is the only alternative to the SBA family and others like them who want to make a living farming.

However, the lack of land to expand does not prevent the SBA family from looking forward. While waiting for the right opportunity, they plan to save 1,000,000 UGS (US $270) into their VICOBA in order to expand their chicken and pig projects later.
