Ngara, TZ – School garden club working shoulder to shoulder with garden shop – 20 May 2016

Copy of IMG_5584SODAT is expanding its partnership with Mukibogoye Primary School by collaborating to develop a school farm that can sustainably provide daily breakfast to the 800 students who attend. School garden clubs are working alongside SODAT garden shop employees to design, build, and maintain the farm.

So far, two school garden clubs have helped start four vegetables gardens, four starch gardens, and a banana farm. The school is organizing additional clubs of 20 students to begin helping as the project expands to eventually include nearly 3 acres of green vegetables, bananas, and starch root vegetables. For the last three weeks the clubs have harvested over 60 kilograms of vegetables per week. In the coming weeks they expect to begin harvesting starch root vegetables as well.

In addition to managing project implementation, SODAT is also providing organic agriculture education to the garden clubs. Students will learn about the lifecycle of a productive garden so they can apply best practices to their own organic vegetable gardens at home.
