Utete, TZ – MHK general store – 27 Jun 2014

In June 2013 the MHK family received a micro loan from Better Lives, in partnership with the Kindwitwi Development Association, to expand his small general store and begin selling spare bicycle parts.

Before receiving the loan the family ran a small store but was unable to attain high profit margins because they could never afford to buy products wholesale or keep a diverse inventory. Before receiving the loan the family was averaging a low profit each month. Since receiving their loan and expanding the store, the family has tripled its profit each month.

The MHK parents have three children, age 15, 12, and 4. They bought a bicycle so their children are able to get to school a few miles away with less time and energy spent on the long walk. They are hoping that if business keeps going well their children can continue their education even past secondary school. They are also saving up for a new home. After paying off the loan for their shop, the family is looking forward to getting a loan for an electrical connection followed by a loan for a new house.
